This book was written by me the humble one
a poor and lonely man, a foreigner, the most poor man of all
a rag-clothed man, wearing black, a wannabe monk
whose name is Makarios the servant of Jesus.
He who holds this book in his hands

I beg them all not to reproach me
even though it serves me right to be blamed by all,
Nevertheless, since I am being imprisoned in this jail
I cannot see clearly what I am writing down
this is why all the letters and the accents
are badly written and mistaken,
- How could the handwriting be a good one and the letters well placed
since -alas- I was sitting in the dark, without being able to see?-
This is why I am asking you to go easy on me.
I hope that those who are now hearing my words
will not have the impression that I was put in jail for any other reason,
let me, my friend, my beloved brother,
explain to you the real reason, so that you know.
As we were settled in peace in the peak of the Mountain,
two Latin (clergymen) came, and they wanted to speak to us·
And we told them the truth
confessing our true faith
and then, out of spite, they sent a report to their leader.
After they had us arrested we all confessed before everybody

They were full of envy and they didn't know what to do

they do not let us see the light, neither during the day, nor at night,
but they have us incarcerated in the dark, just like in Hades.
My love to you is the reason why I wrote this book
being enclosed in the dark ·
Hence I am asking you, when you'll hold this book
to remember me, the poor man, no matter if I am alive or dead,
since we are ready to die for the sake of Truth.
This is why we've came here willingly .
We have been imprisoned in this jail
for seven months now, during which this book was completed.
As for what shall follow, only God knows what it will happen to us, the poor foreign ones,
- Since He is our only hope and we pray to him every day
we are worshiping Him and we will do whatever it pleases Him-
Take good care of this book and everything that is written in it
so that your soul and your body benefit from it.
