and only wages prove to be remarkably stable.

we just laugh at ourselves.
By and large we're okay.
 
A young idiot races through the city as if on a highway,
showing off his car's practical top speed.
The kid who happened to cross the street lies
on the operation table. No way you could revive him.
 
Of course the case is bound to go to court.
A medal won't fill the prosecutor's plate though
A plump enveloppe under the right table
and the defendant merrily drives away.

By and large we're okay
 

• 1. the expression is used literally here, but it usually means 'to be helpless/powerless'
• 2. lit. 'our life, scaring us, flows away like water'. I can't seem to find a way to say that in proper English though
