Mímir's Death
The Vanir initially wanted to preserve the peaceTo honour and protect the peace they came to the idea,
to name Hœnir of the Æsir to lead their House,
and me, the giant Mímir, to nominate as his right-hand-man
So we lived for some time completely without dispute
and only enjoyed how beautiful life is
We steered the fate and activity of the Vanir
with the best knowledge and conscience in calm, good directions
With time it happened that Hœnir's mind addled
His status in Vanaheimr's hall was that he was a braggart
Blinded by the power, that the Council had given him
He enraged the Vanir with his patter
'I created the World', he spoke, 'therefore pay me homage!
I am a grand creator and only thus are you all here!'
The Vanir presumed that all Æsir were as he,
and were united in their desire to see the death of Valhalla's sons
The price for Hœnir's megalomania and pomposity
is the death of the giant Mímir and so broke the union asunder
Built through one word on the pledge of victory
given through the Gods and ruined through a murder
So begins a new war
We go to battle
and fight side-by-side for the preservation of our power
One day befell it so, that's when it happened
Hœnir boasted as never before, there was a fight
Somebody drew a battle axe at this brawl
and beheaded me with a loud cry
'Now we will see,' he said facing Hœnir,
'what you're really worth without your right hand!'
That was the last of what I heard,
thereafter came the dark night
and only here with you now am I awoken from my sleep
The price for Hœnir's megalomania and pomposity
is the death of the giant Mímir and so broke the union asunder
Built off of victory's pledge through one word
given through the Gods and ruined through a murder
So begins a new war
We go to battle
and fight side-by-side for the preservation of our power
