Two doves bolted into the sky
Two doves bolted into the skyBoth cooing as they rose.
Ai, ai, aijajaijā
Both cooing as they rose.
Two brothers rode off to war
Pondering as they rode:
Should they ride or should they not,
Or should they stay in the homestead?
It is a good life in a homestead,
Young girls make up the bed.
Who made [bed] for a soldier,
Who would spread a sheet?
Pine branches, spruce/fir needles -
Soldiers sheet.
Mossy ground, stones -
Soldiers pillow.
Where did my brother go —
The bearer of our banner?
There he went, there he stayed
On those Prussian borderlands.
There strolled sons of God,
Gathering souls.
When they find a soul,
Wrap it up in a white woolen shawl.
Bring it to quiet shade,
Lay it down God's cradle.
Oh, dear/beloved soul,
Killed in war but not dead.
