My Father's Cottage
My childhood home was no bigger than the doghouse at the manorBut for me it was so sweet and pretty, and the only place where I found peace
My father's cottage was low and small, and it had two stairs
When I left my father's stairs to walk round this world
By the road to my father's house there grew two rowan trees
There I would sit all evening long, gazing at the lovely moon
When the begonia and the sunflower bloomed on the windowsill
In the twilight hours my mother's old spinning wheel hummd
When my abandoned mother would sit spinning all evening long
Tears fell down her cheeks, drenching the strangers' wool
Death had taken six of her children, they were safe in the Netherworld
She wondered if her dark son had fallen in this world's market roads
Then I heard a whisper coming across the Atlantic Ocean
Back at home the arms of the vagabond's abandoned mother had grown cold
Back at home the arms of the vagabond's abandoned mother had grown cold
