Brainless
Through my whole life I wished for itAs I grew I longed for it
For a great man to protect me
A suitable one for my kind
But my father could not get
My mother did not promise me
A great man to protect me
A suitable one for my kind
I was given a man
A ship brought me a male
He is tall like a man, shaped like man
But he does not have a man's mind in his head
The mind has been taken, only the head remains
The brain has been taken from his forehead

Sweetheart
My sweetheart is far awayI wonder how he spends his time
Though I look happy
At times I'm overcome by sadness
All kinds of flowers grow
But blue ones are rare
It has been a while
Since I last saw his eyes

Brother
I was before as I was--I was as an apple flower
a lingonberry flower on a hillock
father called me a blossom
mother, the dawning of the day
my sister1, a blue roll of string2
I left in my youth to tend the flock--
as a lassie out to herd sheep
to the bank of a brook I came
at the bank of the brook stood a willow
from which fell a young lad
a buckle in mouth, a belt in hand
I, poor one, took to weeping--
and the youngster to asking
what is it that you weep for, young maiden?
there is something that I weep for
I weep for my young brother
I have not seen with my eyes
since he went to war as a youth
since he went to war as a youth
do not weep for your brother--
from there your brother comes
from under the castle oars were rowing
above the castle a head was seen
I, poor one, began to hear
wretched and lowly, started looking
my brother stood beside me--
before me my dear mother's child
- 1. the echo here changes the meaning of the word slightly, from 'sister' (siso) to 'my sister' (sisoni)
- 2. I opted to translate 'sinikerä' literally, I've seen it translated by other people as 'day', 'sun' or 'moon' but the term is ancient and I couldn't find a definitive answer to what it refers to

Wind
Oh thou Ukko and thou AkkaWeavers all of winds and weather
Pray I do to a black man
Raise a wind and make it whirling
Raise a wind and make it whirling
Make a gale that's great and growing
Tear up tar stumps off the roadside
Pull the pine trees off the lake shore
Break the tops of giant oak trees
Crash their robust roots to splinter
Rise thou wind to blow and bellow
Gust and gale to whirl all over
Rise thou wind to blow and bellow
Rage and rave, thou angry weather,
Blow thou wind through more than six years
Rage through summers more than seven
Rapids rise to rush in torrents
Aged waters to run swiftly
And thou self rush like the rapids
And prevail without a hindrance
Pray I do to a black man
Raise a wind and make it whirling
Raise a wind and make it whirling
Make a gale that's great and growing

Maiden's song
It never leaves my mindnor crumbles from my memories
merciful sweet time
when as a child I sung
as a little lassie I twittered
with the joy of a sweet bird
there upon the bosom of the clouds
free, without worry
free of broodings was my breast
I lulled before like the wind
dashed like a spark
I flew as a leaf in the grove
as a butterfly on a river bank
the nectar I tasted sweet
from the cup of a golden flower
shimmering silver
I flew as a leaf in the grove
as a butterfly on a river bank
the nectar I tasted sweet
from the cup of a golden flower
shimmering silver
With joy I sat upon the glade
with sweet thoughts upon the hummock
as a flower I sat on the mound
gently playing
with sweet sisters
calmy lulled
by the breath of breezes
from the nectary mainland
Gently playing
with sweet sisters
calmy lulled
by the breath of breezes
from the nectary mainland
Like a picture of repose in the grove
I would sleep like a wagtail
peace most beloved built
beside me would move it's home
And my dreaming was not threatened
by waking worries
by these great sorrows
now burning my bosom
