1.There in the ancient land Kazan
The fair Sumbeki's reign began.
The poet-singer in love's duty,
Sang her songs, drunk on her beauty.
A widow, of such loyalty,
She loved her spouse eternally
Long dead and gone, a glorious khan.
Her nights in weeping carried on.
Kazan deified her in glory.
Ivan1 sought her hand in matrimony.
Tsar Grozny of Mother Rus, through and through,
Was blinded by that beauty too.
He saw her portrait and the grace
Of heaven shining in her face.

Ivan's matchmakers had no ease
Sumb chased them all away like thieves.
The tsar in fury then began
To wage a war against Kazan.
Sumb ascended a minaret,
Intending to jump and life forlet
But the tower bent over a river there:
'Desist, my queen, most fair!'
'Sumb, forgive me' the tsar cried
'You don't have to become my bride,
Let Kazan live and flourish long,
Poet-singer sing us the song!
Glorify Kazan's beauty forever
I will never be able to forget her.'
