Dance of Death (S)

(zig and zig and zag), Death's shouting the beat
as it stomps its heel on a forlorn grave.
Death plays a dancing tune around midnight
(zig zag zig zag) on its violin.

A winter wind blows and the night is dark,
Whinings can be heard coming from the bush1
Bleached skeletons move through the shadows
as they run and hop under their great shrouds.

(zig and zig and zag) See how they wriggle,
and the dancers' bones clatter all around.
A lustful couple sits on the bare moss
as if to enjoy a sweetness of old.

(zig and zig and zag) Death keeps on scraping
in an endless tune its shrill instrument.
A veil has fallen! The dancer is naked!
And her dancer hugs her with tender love.

They say the Lady is of noble breed2
and her old charmer, a measly weelwright.
What a dreadful sight! Now she yields to him
like the boorish lout were a true baron!

(zig and zig and zig) What a merry dance!
See these death circles dancing hand in hand!
(zig and zig and zag) In that merry crowd
the king can be seen next to the villein!

Now pfft! The round dance suddenly disbands
in a commotion. The cockerel has sung!
What a night that was for the meek and small!
Hooray! Long live Death, and equality!
