The smuggler of El Paso

On the 7th of August
we were so desperate
that they took us handcuffed
out of El Paso to Kansas.

They took us out of court
at eight o'clock in the evening,
they took us station
where they put us in a car.

The train is coming
the bell is already ringing,
I asked Mister Hill
if we are going to Louisiana.

Mister Hill with a snicker
replied: No sir,
we're passing Louisiana
straight to Leavenworth.

It's nice contrabanding
you make a lot of money,
but what's truly very sad
is the sorrows of a prisoner.

Oh! my little mother
I send you a sigh and a hug,
for here ends the ballad
of the smuggler of El Paso.

The ballad of the wetbags*

Because we're wetbags
the law is always after us,
because we're illegals
and we don't know English,
the stubbornly kicks us out
and we come back again.

Some come in through ,
through
through
and through Nogales2 too,
through
so many of us come in each month.

Our problem
can easily be resolved:
give us3 a little Gringa4
so we can emigrate
and when we get our papers5
we'll tell her to hit the road.

If there are no more wetbags
who will we depend on
to pick the tomatoes,
lettuce and beets?
the limes, grapes and grapefruit
will all go to waste.

And they will close down
all of the dance halls,
because if they kick out the wetbag
they'll all dance poorly,
and those on welfare
will have no one to console them.

Our problem
can easily be resolved:
give us a little Gringa
so we can emigrate
and when we get our papers
we'll tell her to hit the road.
