Last Night I Was In The Village

Last night I was in the village,
On the other side of the stream.
I heard a sweet voice,
My girl is crying.

Cry, come on, cry,
It's your own fault.
You had a lovely chap,
Why'd you leave him.

Tomorrow, there's going to be a fair in Klagenfurt,
I'll take him up there.
I'll either exchange him
Or sell him.

I won't give him away for a low price,
It was hard for me to get him.
I'll rather take him home
And love him even more.

I'll prepare žganci* for him,
Dress them with cracklings.
When he'll eat the cracklings,
I'll also pour milk in.

I'm old, I'm grumpy,
And I can't work.
Drink, eat, dance,
That I can still do.

The cold even kills the nettle**,
But it can't kill this guy.
He's sitting there, next to the furnace
So that the cold can't hurt him.
