summer leap

Dreams and reality are reflected in the pool
Being irresponsible after school1
I don't like fizzy soda
But if you offer it to me, I think I'd be able to drink it
I'm so bored in this classroom
Lost in the evening rain, I see your face2
My heart pounds, melting into you
This might be a dream that will end soon
I'm not able to speak your name3
This feeling isn't enough
I hate this desire, but4
If I'm alone in the end, you'll keep playing over and over5

How many times did that summer vacation end?
I've been locked in it's afterimage for 8 months6
Again and again I see your farewell, my first love, and
I drink my flat soda one more time

As the ice melts, I see signs of cicadas
Faint dreams of mayflies linger
A notice of a lost child shakes7
Hey, do you really not remember?
The familiar scenery of the summer festival
Target shooting and goldfish in your left hand8
My heart pounds louder with you
But we tore apart and I guess it's all a waste
The smell of the fireworks doesn't go away
I don't want to wake up from this curse
Again, I can't talk to you
Once more, everything with you starts over from the beginning

I can't say anything about that last summer vacation
I've been locked in it's afterimage for 8 months9
That day, we saw fireworks and held hands in the glow of the sunset but
Once more, I drink down many memories

  • 1. I took liberties in translating this line to make it sound better in English.
  • 2. The word 横顔 specifically refers to a face seen in profile (from the side).
  • 3. Literally, this sentence seems to say 'I can't say your two characters' which I think refers to the name of the singer's crush (names in Japanese typically have two kanji in them).
  • 4. 暑い literally means 'heat', but can also refer to desire/passion/being horny/etc.
  • 5. That is, the singer is constantly reliving memories of her crush.
  • 6. I thought about using 'memory' rather than 'afterimage', but afterimage is a more accurate translation and it's a very evocative word.
  • 7. Presumably in the wind.
  • 8. These are common activities at Japanese summer festivals
  • 9. I tried to find a better English word than 'afterimage' to use here, but couldn't think of anything that expressed the meaning well.
