Let us push forward our folks

When we depart from the job sites
My dear friends with happy hearts
To go and see our parents
My dear friends with content hearts

[CHORUS] 1
Let us push forward our folks2
Let us push forward!

To go and see our parents
My dear friends with content hearts
But when we arrived in Canada3
Well, we'll have to get wet here
[CHORUS]

But when we arrived in Canada
Well, we'll have to get wet here
Ah! But when it'll be all wet
You'll see just how it'll walk/work4
[CHORUS]

Ah! But when it'll be all wet
You'll see just how it'll work
When our friends will see us arrive
They'll start laughing and then dancing
[CHORUS]

When our friends will see us arrive
They'll start laughing and then dancing
Sunday evening, at the veillée 5
We'll go see our partners6
[CHORUS]

Sunday evening, at the vigil
We'll go see our partners
They'll say to us, while entering
Here's my lover, my heart's content
[CHORUS]

They'll say to us, but while entering
Here's my lover, my heart's content
And in the middle of the veillée
They'll tell of their gallants 7
[CHORUS]

And in the middle of the veillée
They'll tell of their gallants
They'll say to us, while departing
Have you frequented new lovers 8
[CHORUS]

They'll say to us, while departing
Have you frequented new lovers
Who has composed this song

  • 1. I don't know the name of this kind of song, but it was pretty typical of working class french canadian's songs to be stories interlaced with the same chorus. Workmen would take turn singing the verses, something adding new one, while everybody would sing the chorus. This is why there are so many variation of this song.
  • 2. Literally : let's send our folks in the front. Meaning : let's go guys/let's put more efforts in this
  • 3. From ~1535 up until 1763, Canada was a province of New France. When the britishs took over, they adopted the name topogically, but they would only start calling themselves 'Canadians' around ~1915, effectively forcing the original canadiens to call themselves 'french canadians' or to adopt a new name (québécois)
  • 4. A bit nebulous, but it probably mean 'being wet will wake us up' thus 'we'll be more effective once wet'
  • 5. Kind of hard to translate. veillée is an evening of fun where people go to bed late if at all
  • 6. Compagne/compagnée is basically a significant other. The female version of the word for 'companion'
  • 7. Cavalier : a sprightly young dashing military man. Also often used to talk about somebody courting a women
  • 8. Amant : somebody you had sex with, but with whom you're not in a relationship with, or you're in a secret relationship with that person while you're not supposed to (ex. a mistress)

The three men in black

On the wedding night after dinner
Three men in black arrived
Three men in black arrived
They asked for the bride.

The bride is here indeed
Do come to sit at the dinner table
We want neither drink nor food
But we'd dance willingly.

They had not done three steps of dance
That the bride was taken away
That the bride was taken away
Without anyone stopping them

The morrow in his garden
The handsome lover who is having a walk
Sees the devil in the form of a horseman
Come towards him.

Oh tell me about your wedding ceremony last night during the ceremony?
My beautiful wedding of last night
My bride was taken away

Do put your foot on top of mine
I will make you see Marie your love
I will take you there, I will bring you back
Without doing you any harm.

When he arrived in hell
He sees his love Marie.
Marie my love am I the reason
Why you are here today?

Oh no, oh no, my dear lover
You are not the reason (why I'm here)
It's the three evil brothers
That have made me swear not to get married

The golden ring I have on my finger
I pray you to leave it to me
If you don't take the ring off her finger
I'm going to chop off her neck

Oh I had only three months left
Three months and also a few weeks
Now my ring has been taken off
I'll now stay here forever.

I Don't Have Beard on My Chin

My father had a house built.
I don't have beard on my chin.
Had it built on the end of a bridge.

The fine weather's goin' away
The bad weather's comin' back
I don't have beard on my chin...
But I'm goin' to!

My father1, give me a gift
I don't have beard on my chin
Give me your house

Give me your house
I don't have beard on my chin
My daughter, promise me...

The fine weather's goin' away
The bad weather's comin' back
I don't have beard on my chin...
But I'm goin' to!

My daughter, promise me
I don't have beard on my chin
To never like boys

To never like boys
I don't have beard on my chin
I'd rather have the house

To never like boys
I don't have beard on my chin
In ashes and in coal

And even you my father on the gable
I don't have beard on my chin
You'd warm your heels

The fine weather's goin' away
The bad weather's comin' back
I don't have beard on my chin...
But I'm goin' to!

In The Month of May

In the month of May, while the river rises
In the month of May, the girls are beautiful
The girls are beautiful, hey nonney, the girls are beautiful.

And all the lovers, while the river rises
And all the lovers change their mistresses
They change their mistresses, hey nonney, they change their mistresses.

But I, I will not change, while the river rises
But I, I will not change, because my woman is too beautiful
Because my woman is too beautiful, hey nonney, because my woman is too beautiful.

She has beautiful blue eyes, while the river rises
She has beautiful blue eyes, bright red lips
Bright red lips, hey nonney, bright red lips.

Oh! It would be sweet, while the river is rising
Oh! It would be sweet to sleep with her
To sleep with her, hey nonney, to sleep with her.

In a small house, while the river is rising
In a small house, near a fountain
Near a fountain, hey nonney, near a fountain

And every morning, while the river is rising
And every morning, my bride bathes
My bride bathes, hey nonney, my bride bathes

In the month of May, while the river rises
In the month of May, the girls are beautiful

The Reel

My father had no daughters but me

I lead it well, my reel

One day, he sent me off to sea

I lead it well, I lead it around
I lead it well, I lead it around
I lead it well, my reel

The seaman who led me

I lead it well, my reel

He fell in love with me

I lead it well, I lead it around
I lead it well, I lead it around
I lead it well, my reel

Sweetie, kiss me

(I lead it well, my reel)

Yes sir, I wouldn't dare

I lead it well, I lead it around
I lead it well, I lead it around
I lead it well, my reel

For if my dad knew

For if my dad knew

I would be a beaten daughter

Who is it here who would tell you well

It would be the birds

The birds in the woods know it

Force and earth as well

My god, the world is cunning

Than teaching birds Latin
