The Past

You thought you were going to be a big and famous architect
Who covers all train stations and museums in steel and glass
You saw yourself standing at construction sites of dams, with a helmet
Or in front of a bank, with a toy and a suitcase full of money
 
You heard yourself talking on TV, before the key election
And advised your enemies to go home and paint
You dreamt you were a runner, a hundred metres in six seconds
But now you are standing here with your grindstone and throw it into the well
 
And the past, (oh yes, my friend) the past is catching up with you.
 
You thought you would write an awfully long novel
That is so deep and meaningful, important to everyone
You thought they would take pictures, a lot of acclaim, major all of it,
You thought it would start something really important
 
You thought you would inherit a house close to Bordeaux
And outside there is someone mowing the lawn, you are sitting on the toilet with some coffee
And from the living room someone is shouting 'She looks like Anna Karina'
Come have breakfast already, I love you so much
 
And the past, and the past, and the past is catching up with you
 
You thought you were going to be a petty and underestimated architect
Who builds a treehouse for himself and henceforth hides inside of it
Then someone came, who probably thought one has to go to school

And then school was already over and somehow there was no house anymore
No time for reconstruction, one needs to improve
You thought 'When I'm at the top, no one will kick my heels
Then I'll write the rules, and will relax'
For that one must push through, not only one degree but four
You drew thousands of boring houses on quadrille paper
And using all the lovely money, you built a house close to Bordeaux
But all the lights were always already turned off when you came home
 
You thought 'When I'm really old, I'll finally quit everything
And fill my life just with beautiful, true, and precious things
You thought a lot about it and precisely conceived the plan
