The Gondolier

Stern! Ok! Stern! Ok!1
Gondola, gondola, Ok!

Moon night,
starry night,
I row in the in lagoon, I row
and I want to sing.

I am the gondolier
who lulls you in a gondola,
if my oar creaks on the rowlock
it drowns out the smack of kisses.

I am the gondolier
who still rocks you in the sea,
don’t care about me,
I make the gondola go.

Oh, oh, oh oh!
Stern! Ok! Stern! Ok!
Gondola, gondola, Ok!
Oh, oh, oh oh!

The wind blows and the sun
already rises in the east,
I return to the dock, I row,
and I want to sing.

I am the gondolier
who lulls you in a gondola,
if my oar creaks on the rowlock
it drowns out the smack of kisses.

I am the gondolier
who still rocks you in the sea,
don’t care about me,
I make the gondola go.

Stern! Ok! Stern! Ok!
Gondola, gondola, Ok!

  • 1. «Pope! - Oeh!» is a typical expression of Venetian gondoliers, who row standing on the poop of the boat.
They announce their arrival by shouting «Pope!» (the gondola driver arrives!) before turning into one of the narrow channels that have no visibility, and if someone is coming from the other hand, he replies: Oeh! (Ok!).
