Assargadon

(the Assyrian inscription)

I am the lord of earthly kings - Assargadon.
The czars and chiefs, I tell you: woe to be upon you!
As soon as I took reigns, the rebels seized Sidon.
I overthrew Sidon and in the sea its stones threw.

To Egypt, words of mine resounded like a law,
Elam could read its fate in single glance that I threw,
I built my mighty throne upon the bones of foes.
The czars and chiefs, I tell you: woe to be upon you!

Who will surpass me? Who will be my equal, who?
All people's deeds are like a ghost in mad dreams' stew.
The dream of feats is like a child's play story.

I've drained you to the bottom, vapid earthly glory!
And now I stand alone, delighted to my bone,
I am the lord of earthly kings - Assargadon.

Premonition

My love's a scorching noon of Java jungle,
The deadly scent is spilled like chilling dream,
The lizards there lie with closed eyes' gleam,
And here boas coil in tight-knit bungle.

And you have entered deadly gardens, why?
For relaxation or for sweet amusement?
The flowers shake, the grasses breathe insouciant,
I'm charmed, but poison oozes out nigh.

Come on: I am in here! We'll enjoy it,
We'll play and wander, wearing orchid wreaths,
Entwine the bodies like snake couple's sheaths!

Day'll slip away. Your eyes will close - don't spoil it.
That will be death. - And with the shroud of vines
I will entwine your bodily confines.

The First Snow

Sparkles, lights, and silver tinsels, -
The whole world's in silver gray!
Birch trees burn in pearls and spinels,
Black and bare just yesterday.

That's the realm of someone's dream shows,
These are visions, dreams of belle!
All the subjects of old kin prose
Are lit up by magic spell.

Stately carriages, jay walkers,
On the azure sky's white blaze.
People's life and nature's lockers're
Full of new and sacred ways.

The embodiment of daydreams,
Play of life with vision spells,
That's the world of bright enchantments,
That's the world of silver bells!

Misty Nights

Wildly trembling I stand at the entrance,
At the door where I entered before, just last evening,
And the letters of night constellations are put into stanzas.
Oh, the dark misty nights in June, scorching and steaming!

Over there, on landlocked covered terrace
Burning eyes have been leaning towards me with passion,
Dear facial features, distorted in spirited grimace.
Oh, the dark misty nights! Oh, the nights of compassion!

Here's the secret of vain earthly pleasures...
Was it what I expected last night, true believer?
I am trembling from shame - I am laughing! You lied to me, shadows!
And you lied to me, nights! Misty nights in June fever!

Quench, Relieve Our Suffering, Good Lord!..

Quench, relieve our suffering, good Lord!
Like wild beasts we have cowered in dungeons -
Our bed is hard granite, not smooth sward,
Stifling lack of light and faith is pungent.

Semiprecious gems sparkle like gold tracks,
Rows of columns stretch out into cool gneiss,
Ugly creatures creep out from the cold cracks -
Salamanders, grass snakes, and large woodlice.

Our skin sores are filled with the thick pus,
Like a carrion is our body...
Lord, spread out the last shroud without stigmas,
Over graveyard repose spread it, bloody!
