A szeretet évszakai

[Mindenki]
525,600 perc
525,000 oly kedves pillanat
525,600 perc
Hogy mérsz, hogy mérsz egy évet?

Nappalokban, naplementékben, éjfélekben, kávés csészékben
Hüvelyekben, mérföldekben, nevetésben, küzdelemben
525,600 percben
Hogy mérsz egy évet az életből?

Mi van a szeretettel?
Mi van a szeretettel?
Mi van a szeretettel?
Mérd szeretetben
A szeretet évszakai
A szeretet évszakai

[Joanne]
525,600 perc
525,000 megtervezendő út
525,600 perc
Hogy méred egy nő vagy egy férfi életét?

[Collins]
Az igazságokban, amiket megtanult, vagy a pillanatokban amikor sírt
Hidakban, melyeket elégetett, vagy abban, ahogy meghalt?

[Mindenki]
Itt az idő, hogy énekelj
Bár a történetnek sosincs vége
Ünnepeld, emlékezz egy évre
A barátokkal teli életből

[Mindenki & Joanne]
Emlékezz a szeretetre
Oh, muszáj, muszáj emlékezned a szeretetre
Emlékezz a szeretetre
Tudod, hogy a szeretet ajándék odafentről
Emlékezz a szeretetre
Oszd meg, add tovább, terjeszd a szeretetet
Mérd szeretetben
A szeretet évszakai
A szeretet évszakai
Mérd az életed, mérd az életed szeretetben

Rent

[Mark:]
How do you capture reality on film?
The world is running out of things that are real)
Struggle and games, empty stomach, instead of new goals:
'Get out - or pay!'
Rent!

[Roger:]
How do you finish a song?
No chord makes sense,
No riff lays right in your hand
Every note tastes sour, where is the power?
The power which used to burn in the air?

[Mark:]
We’re starving and freezing…

[Roger:]
...what a life we lead...

[Roger & Mark:]
Where we gonna get,
Where we gonna get,
Where the hell are we gonna get the money?

[Mark:]
One thing remains: Candles!

[Roger:]
How are you supposed to make a fire without firewood at home?
And the trigger is jammed, it reeks like hell!

[Mark:]
How can you be so angry, and yet so cold?
Your feet are snow white…

[Roger & Mark:]
...and they’re turning blue!

[Mark:]
Let’s see if there’s smoke

[Roger:]
My poster!

[Mark:]
My screenplay!

[Roger & Mark:]
Where we gonna get,
(Where we gonna get,
Where the hell we gonna get the money?

[Joanne:]
Pick up, Maureen!
It’s me calling, Joanne!
Your stand-in stage manager, hey hey hey!
Have you eaten?
Stay on the subject, Maureen
Hey darling, c’mon, eat, or you’ll never make it!
You won’t throw up, you won’t throw up!
The digital delay?
Not broken anymore, not exactly…
I can fix it, the show will be great
You don’t need Mark!

[Collins:]
How do you stay up on the horse?
Fear keeps everyone on their feet at every turn
It’s the hard knock life
“There’s no place like home,”
Don’t have a breakdown
Everything’s full of pus,
And… uh-oh, I’m unwell…

[Mark:]
Where is he?

[Collins:]
Ugh, my head’s heavy…

[Roger & Mark:]
Where we gonna get,
Where we gonna get,
Where the hell we gonna get the money?

[Benny:]
Alison, you sound sad, babe!
Unbelievable, these two
I’m just a piece of shit to them
Seems like our marriage bothers them, oh well
I want to help, it’ll stay that way, and I’ll never take no for an answer
(Something is brewing,
Nobody’s stopping)

[Collins:]
(Oh, that was deceitful.
Oh, I need a drink)

[Mark:]
“The notes glorify the night of ardent fire”

[Joanne:]
Maureen, I will not let this show take over my life!

[Roger:]
“It crackles so wittily, because there was an arsonist at work here.”

[Joanne:]
Theatre’s never been my life!

[Mark:]
What’s past is past
Already burnt to the ground

[Roger & Mark:]
Whatever will be will be
And it’ll burn like straw!

[Mark:]
Maureen? Hi!
Your equipment’s on strike?
Well, I’m not!

[Mark & half the ensemble:]
How do you overcome what was?
It finds ways and it creeps into your heart
It reaches really deep and rends your soul open,
You’re bent over in pain
Rent!

[Roger & the other half of the ensemble:]
How can you survive times like this?
Where everyone betrays each other, even your own blood?

[Everyone:]
What still holds the world together,
When the wind turns into a tornado,
Has time run out?

[Benny:]
I’ve had it up to here!
Don’t make another move!

[Roger:]
Take your camera into battle!

[Mark:]
Play music and make steam!

[Everyone:]
They won’t get you ‘til you’re dead!

[Roger & Mark:]
We’re never gonna pay the rent!
We’re never gonna pay the rent!
We’re never gonna pay the rent!

[Everyone:]
Last year,
This year,
Next year,
Money, money, money, money, money!
No rent, no money!

[Roger & Mark:]
What is the world worth?

2019.03.18.

I'll Show You

[Benny:]
Joy to the world,
Hey, you bum!
Yeah you- move it!
You gotta handle my Range Rover carefully!

[Mark:]
This attitude towards the homeless
Is exactly what Maureen is protesting against tonight

Close-up: Our ex-roommate
Benjamin Coffin,
Who married Alison Grey of the Westport Grey lineage
Afterwards, he bought this building
And the surrounding lots from his father-in-law
In the hopes he could open a Cyber Studio here

[Benny:]
Maureen is protesting now,
Because she's loosing her performance space
I'm just standing on the sidelines

[Roger:]
What happened to Benny,
And to his heart
And the values he stood for?

[Benny:]
Every owner has the right
To keep up with the times
Besides, I'm not rich like Croesus, either

[Collins:]
Happy birthday, Jesus!

[Benny:]
The rent

[Mark:]
Just forget it, dude

[Roger:]
No money!

[Mark:]
And you're breaking your word
Are you going to kick us out?

[Benny:]
There's one way, but if not, I'd be ready to do so...

[Roger:]
I knew it!

[Benny:]
Cyber Arts isn't very far from here
And that's where you'll be free to practice your trades1
And our dream will finally become a reality!

I'll show you!
I'll show you!

A state of the art, digital,
Virtual, interactive studio!
I'll forget about your rent,
And my word is as good as gold,
You can live here as long as you want,
Just do me this one little favor

[Mark:]
What?

[Benny:]
Make Maureen call off the protest

[Mark:]
Just get yourself an injunction
And call the cops!

[Benny:]
Done and done!
They're on standby
But my investors would rather avoid a big fuss

[Roger:]
You can't quietly
Wipe out an entire tent city
And then watch 'Kein schöner Land' on TV!2

[Benny:]
This place here is optimal
For films and for songs!
We've dreamt of this,
Think about it, the chance won't come again

I'll show you!
I'll show you!

Coming soon - a beautiful studio,
And finally, the work will pay off
Apartments on top,
Then the shop will stay open
You guys stop the demonstration,
Otherwise, there's not gonna be anything in it for you
You'll help - or you'll pack

[Angel:]
That dude needs Prozac desperately!

[Roger:]
Or a shot of drugs

[Mark:]
Or a group kiss

[Collins:]
That reminds me...
We have to make a slight detour this evening
Anyone who wants to can come along

[Angel:]
'Life Support' is a group for people
Where they talk about life
We don't need to stay long, either!

[Mark:]
First I have to make the protest work

[Angel:]
Roger?

[Roger:]
What am I supposed to do, in the state I'm in?

[Mark:]
Don't be a crybaby

[Angel:]
He'll meet us later,
He's got other things on his mind
We'll see you!

[Mark & Collins:]
We'll see, boys!

[Roger:]
Leave me alone, boys!

[Collins:]
I like boys

[Angel:]
And they like me just as much!

[All:]
Why not

  • 1. This literally means 'Business will be allowed here,' but that didn't make much sense
  • 2. I only found one google result of this, it was a miniseries shown in Germany around Christmas in 1998, but originally aired in September and October of 1985. This translation of RENT itself was probably written in 1998, as it seems to have been released in 1999 or 2000, and judging on the spelling [Which I converted], was written before the spelling change. If anyone knows about the cultural significance of this show, please feel free to comment!

You Got a Light?

[Roger:]
What else?1

[Mimi:]
Got a light?

[Roger:]
Who are you?
You're - you're shivering

[Mimi:]
I'm fine, the power is cut off
Somehow, nothing's working right today
You got a light?
Why're you staring at me like that?

[Roger:]
Hardly!2
Your hair in the moonlight,
You look familiar
Will you make it?

[Mimi:]
Have nothing in my stomach, gotta eat
It's good that the room is standing still now
Ah, whatever... What?

[Roger:]
Nothing!
Your gaze reminds me of

[Mimi:]
I always remind people of...
Who is she?

[Roger:]
She died. And her name was April.

[Mimi:]
I'm such a klutz!
Your heart's broken
You got a light?

[Roger:]
Ah...

[Mimi:]
Yeah... Ow!

[Roger:]
Oh, the wax. It's-

[Mimi:]
...dripping. I like it - between the...

[Roger:]
...fingers! How about if... ah, nothing!
Good night!
Did it go out again?

[Mimi:]
No, I lost my stuff

[Roger:]
Now I know where I saw you earlier
I was there a lot!
Your light is out

[Mimi:]
I'm feeling sick - I had it when I came through your door
It's pure - is it here with you?

[Roger:]
With me?

[Mimi:]
They say my ass is the best in the entire East Village
Is that true?

[Roger:]
What?

[Mimi:]
You're staring at me

[Roger:]
Oh no, I mean-
You have got a - really quite pretty...
Something's familiar

[Mimi:]
Like the deceased?

[Roger:]
When you smile, yeah
But we've met somewhere else

[Mimi:]
Do you ever go to the Cat Scratch Club?
That's my job - I dance
Help me look!

[Roger:]
Yes! You perform while tied up

[Mimi:]
You gotta make a living

[Roger:]
I totally didn't recognize you
Without the handcuffs

[Mimi:]
I'm absolutely freezing,
Come, give me another light

[Roger:]
Forget the stupid stuff
You look like you're 16

[Mimi:]
I'm 19! I feel older
I was born to be wild

[Roger:]
Me too, not so long ago
I shivered like you

[Mimi:]
I'm cold, you know that though!

[Roger:]
And this sweat?

[Mimi:]
I've got a cold

[Roger:]
Aha!
I was a junkie myself

[Mimi:]
Well, once in a while,
I like to feel good3

[Roger:]
Here's - ummmm...

[Mimi:]
What was that?

[Roger:]
Candy wrapper.

[Mimi:]
We're like fire
Hey, let me have the fire!

[Roger:]
My last match

[Mimi:]
We can still see
Thank God there's a moon

[Roger:]
Maybe it's not just the moon
I think Spike Lee's filming in front of our house

[Mimi:]
Such bullshit! Such bullshit

[Roger:]
Cold hands

[Mimi:]
Yours too
Big, like my father's...
Do you wanna dance?

[Roger:]
With you?

[Mimi:]
No - with my father!

[Roger:]
I'm Roger

[Mimi:]
They call me,
They call me, Mimi~

  • 1. Roger thought Mark was at the door, so presumably means 'What else?' as if Mark came back to say more to him. In the English, he asks 'What'd you forget?'
  • 2. In this phrase, Roger means, 'I'm hardly trying to stare at you!' or 'I'm not staring!'
  • 3. Uncertain of the meaning of this

Glitz and Glory

I'm writing one great song, before I...
Glitz and glory
One song before I go
Glory, one song that really stays

Write, one song, one final refrain
Glory, for the pretty boy at the mic
Who wasted his chance

One song, the world was ready for him
Glory, in the eyes of the ladies
The ladies...
Find glory, as the lights flicker cheaply1
One song, the sun is already setting
Glory - this life was so empty
Time heals - time flies!

Glory, in glitz and glory
In glitz and glory, glory!

Find, glory, just one song plain and true
True like a flash of fire
An eternal light

Write, one song, about love and luck2
Glory, for the soul, that was young
Was so young

Write, just one song, before the virus takes over
Glory, sunset
One song, that will redeem me of my failure
Time flies, and then - no reason to torment yourself anymore3
Time flies!

...The door!

  • 1. This is literally 'How the lights flicker cheaply' or 'How cheaply does the light flicker,' but that doesn't sound right in English
  • 2. 'Glück' can mean both 'happiness' and 'luck' in German
  • 3. Could also mean 'no reason to be tormented anymore'

First For You

[Mark:]
Enter Tom Collins!
Computer genius, teacher, vagabond, anarchist,
Ran naked through the Parthenon!

[Mark & Collins:]
Espresso, Marlboro,
Bananas for brunch,
And Cap'n Crunch is our pride and joy

[Collins:]
And firewood!

[Mark:]
Just like Santa Claus!

[Collins:]
Enough applause!

[Roger:]
Oh, hi...

[Collins:]
'Oh, hi' after 7 months?

[Roger:]
Sorry...

[Collins:]
Cheers, get it while it's hot!

[Collins, Mark & Roger:]
Holy night~

[Roger:]
Do you own the institute?

[Collins:]
Nobody liked my theory of Actual Reality,
But I'll teach it soon to all the lazy bums at New York University!
You still at home?

[Roger:]
I was waiting for you, isn't it obvious?

[Collins:]
Maureen's playing today
Come with us to the Life Cafe
C'mon!

[Roger:]
No mooing...

[Collins:]
Gentlemen, the donor of this Christmas feast today
Full of generosity,
Which just makes her talent shine even brighter1
A new member of our Alphabet City Avantgarde:
Angel Dumott Schunard!

[Angel:]
First for you - and tomorrow for me!
First for you - and tomorrow for me!

[Collins:]
Her beat won't leave you cold

[Mark:]
Was so much money just laying on the asphalt?

[Angel:]
I don't know what happened to me today
On Avenue A
A lady in a limousine saw me there
She said:
'Honey, no matter what I do,
I can't sleep one wink
You've got to help me
Make the neighbor's dog disappear in a flash'

'This Akita - Evita, never shuts up
I'm sure if you play nonstop,
That dog will yap for the last time by sunrise2
No question, this mutt will simply bark itself to death'

First for you - and tomorrow for me!
First for you - and tomorrow for me!

I'm thinking:
'Now or never - with a thousand dollar guarantee,
Tax free, if I make her Christmas tree shine like never before3
So I had to get it to bark, and it went pretty fast...
As sure as I'm standing here now, that dog is in doggy hell

After an hour, Evita,
In all her glory,
On the window ledge of the high-rise, thought about death
My 8th drum solo was too loud for her:
A nosedive on the jogging trail in Central Park

First for you - and tomorrow for me!
First for you - and tomorrow for me!

Then, out in the night
I quickly made friends
With the sweetheart here,
Who they almost killed
He was half dead,
But Sister Angel had iodine
I took good care of him
As you can see, he's laughing again

And singing!
First for you - and tomorrow for me!
First for you - and tomorrow for me!
First for you - and tomorrow for me!
First for you - and tomorrow for me!

  • 1. Collins uses 'his' here, but uses 'her' a few moments later. Going by the standard of the latest official proshot of RENT (That being RENT: Live), the pronoun 'she' was used to refer to Angel the entire show, save the time Mark messes up during the funeral and promptly corrects himself. That being said, I'll mark each time 'he' is used, but translate it as she.
  • 2. I'm not necessarily confident in this translation, because 'bis zum Morgenrot' can mean 'until dawn' and 'at dawn.' Context would imply she is sure the dog will be quiet before/at dawn, however.
  • 3. The term here is literally 'if her Christmas tree shines like never before,' but the English version implies Angel is the one who does this ('Tax free, and a bonus if I trim her tree')
2019.03.13.

Are You Okay, Honey?

[Hobo:]
Christmas bells are ringing,
Christmas bells are ringing,
Christmas bells are ringing, somewhere!
Not here!

[Angel:]
Are you okay, honey?

[Collins:]
Could be better

[Angel:]
Do they have your money?

[Collins:]
No, was none to get
The coat, nothing else
I only have one arm left
...Thanks.

[Angel:]
Christmas is the most wonderful time of the year...1
I'm Angel

[Collins:]
Angel? A dream!
An angel here? That's hard to believe
Friends call me Collins, Tom Collins
Nice tree...

[Angel:]
I'll get bandages, everything will be alright!
I'm changing my clothes for the Life Support Meeting at 9:30
Yes, my body here is a comfortable home
For the acquired immune deficiency syndrome2

[Collins:]
As is mine

[Angel:]
We go together well!
I'll get you dressed, should it be a coat?
Enjoy!

[Collins:]
My friends are waiting...

[Angel:]
How red you've become, sweet!
The more the merrier, invite your friends!
And I won't take 'no!'

[Roger:]
Where you headed, dude?

[Mark:]
Maureen calls

[Roger:]
Some people never learn...3

[Mark:]
I don't suppose
You'd want to go out and see her show tonight
Or, come to dinner?

[Roger:]
Zoom in on my empty wallet

[Mark:]
Touché. Take your AZT.
Close on Roger
His girlfriend April wrote to him
'Looks like we have AIDS'
And then died with her veins open

  • 1. I feel this line is less of a non-sequitur and more of a sarcastic interjection. The literal translation is 'Christmas has charm.'
  • 2. The word 'syndrome' isn't used here, but presumably implied. It was used in the English.
  • 3. The German here is literally 'Some people learn it'
