Wolf's Lullaby

When god was creating wolves, he was looking at distant stars
He designed the long night, and the crescent of waning moon
And the darkness was quavering with agitation, reveries smelled of steel and snow
And a huge furry beast walked along the edge of the quiet

Sleep, child, curl up into a ball
You will not be alone
The ancient wise wolf
Watches over you from the skies

When god was creating wolves, he held emeralds in his hands
He weaved silvery silk and the warmth of sping sun rays
But the quicksilver was quavering with threat in the depths of translucent vials
And a huge menacing beast was squinting an eye at the candle flame

Sleep, child, all in good time
Along the succession of forest paths
You will be protected from harm
By the ancient wise wolf

When god was creating wolves, he was playing a tragic play
Bitter on the lips, just as the taste of sagebrush dew
And in the cold flickering of the stars across the endless winter forest
Ran a proud pack of beasts, raising their noses to the sky

Sleep, child, on your warm side
You will not be alone
The ancient wise wolf
Watches over you from the skies

When god was creating wolves, he wanted to bestow them with wings
So that each of them was able to return to their heavenly home
Alas, by some reason this plan did not come to be
And wolf songs mourn it in the blind night of new moon

Sleep. As long as you're sleeping in warmth
Fairytales roam the earth
Even for a beast, it's very important
To believe in miracles
